How Many Pizzas Do I Need for a Party?

How many pizzas for 10, 20, 30 or 50 people? Use our simple formula and chart for 18-inch New York pies, plus tips on mixing flavors and keeping pizza warm.

The short answer: An 18-inch New York pie has 8 slices, and most adults eat 2 to 3 slices. That means about 3 to 4 pies for 10 people, 5 to 8 pies for 20 people, 8 to 12 pies for 30 people and 13 to 19 pies for 50 people.

The formula

We like numbers, so here’s the math we use for every party order:

Pies = guests × slices per person ÷ 8, then round up.

For 20 guests at 2.5 slices each: 20 × 2.5 = 50 slices. 50 ÷ 8 = 6.25, so order 7 pies.

How many slices per person?

  • 2 slices: light eaters, lunch meetings, or when there’s plenty of other food

  • 2.5 slices: the safe average for most adult parties

  • 3 slices or more: teenagers, sports teams, game nights and long evenings

  • 1 to 2 slices: younger kids

When in doubt, round up. One extra pie costs less than running out.

How many pizzas for your group (18-inch pies)

  • 10 people: 20–30 slices, 3 to 4 pies

  • 15 people: 30–45 slices, 4 to 6 pies

  • 20 people: 40–60 slices, 5 to 8 pies

  • 25 people: 50–75 slices, 7 to 10 pies

  • 30 people: 60–90 slices, 8 to 12 pies

  • 40 people: 80–120 slices, 10 to 15 pies

  • 50 people: 100–150 slices, 13 to 19 pies

  • 100 people: 200–300 slices, 25 to 38 pies

How many slices are in a pizza?

It depends on the size. A typical 14-inch “large” from a delivery chain has 8 smaller slices. A New York 18-inch pie also has 8 slices, but each one is much bigger, about the size of two chain slices. If you’re comparing prices, compare by pie size, not by slice count.

How to mix the flavors

A simple rule: about half the pies plain cheese and pepperoni, which almost everyone eats, and the rest specialty and vegetarian. For 20 people (7 pies), that could look like:

  • 3 cheese

  • 2 pepperoni

  • 1 Margherita

  • 1 specialty or square pie

Half-and-half pies are an easy way to cover two preferences in one pie.

A bundle for smaller groups

Our Game Day Classic Bundle is three 18-inch pies (cheese, pepperoni and Margherita) for $75. That’s 24 slices, about right for 10 people at 2 to 2.5 slices each.

Keeping pizza warm

  • Tell us exactly what time you want to eat, and order ahead for big groups.

  • Keep boxes closed and stacked until serving; they hold heat longer.

  • To reheat, put slices on a baking sheet in a hot oven for a few minutes. It brings the crisp bottom back far better than a microwave.
